Modification Design Summary

I will explain the 18th hole in the design supervision of the complete green renovation.
As a commemorative project for the 60th anniversary of the opening, a review of the greens was initiated. The remodeling was aimed at changing the grass species and reviewing the shape of the greens.
The course will be changed from Penn Cross Bent to Royal Links Seven. The shape of the greens was revised along with the reduction of the green area and the undulation of the greens, which had not changed much, and the placement of the guard bunkers was changed accordingly.

Problems before modification

The green was on the left, and the plateau on the right, where the old sub green used to be, was merely a rough area, creating a strange illusion and misleading area. There is a house on the left side, and an out-of-place flying ball into the house was a problem.

Modification Plan

The old Green, which had a vertical shape, was changed to a horizontal one, making it about 600 m2. The left side of the green was elevated and the green was double-tiered. The bunkers on the left and right sides of the existing green were eliminated, and three new bunkers were placed in the front, right, and back of the green.
Several large pine trees on the right side of the old green were cut down to eliminate their negative impact on the green.

A bunker is placed 15 yds in front of the green to create the illusion of distance, and if the pin stands to the left of the green, a shot over the bunker is required. On the other hand, the large bunker on the left front has been replaced by a mound, but the approach area is wide. In addition, the left side of the green is a mound that is designed to receive a punch ball, so even a shot with some momentum can be calculated to remain on the green.

The right side is an elevated green with bunkers on the right and at the back, and the front right floral path slopes sharply and shots that do not reach the green will roll down.
The left side offers a relatively easy approach without a carry to the green with an extended apron, but a ball that lands near the mound to the left of the guard bunker in front of it will likely create a tricky approach shot situation at times.

The excessive width of this hole could be converted into an effective and meaningful playing area. Players will have their own strategies to attack the second shot depending on the position of the pin.
