Modification Design Summary
The East Course, designed by Sadakichi Mano, a graduate of Tokyo University's School of Engineering and Architecture, was narrower and darker than the West Course, which hosted many tournaments, and was often avoided. 2007 saw the renovation of the course to one green, designed by Masashi Okubo, which was completed two years later by restoring the site where the sub green was removed. The new greens with Penrose grass and the new passenger cart paths have increased the popularity of the course, and the number of visitors is now at a ratio of 5 to 5. We asked Mr. Okubo to answer each question.

What concept did you come up with when you were given the task of designing One Greening?
I thought Mr. Mano's design was a routing of 18 holes skillfully placed on a hilly site with ridges and streams, with A greens averaging 450 m2 and B greens 350 m2. The policy was not to simply enlarge the A green and place it in the center of the hole and remove the B green, but to choose one or the other according to the strategic nature of the hole and to devise a completely new green. In addition to the narrowness of the site, trees were planted on the fairway side of the tree line, and over time the hole width became so narrow that it affected the route of attack. In addition to the green remodeling, the fairway width was widened by cutting down the slopes and trimming trees, and the course gained a reputation for being brighter.
How big is the green?
We targeted an average of 530 square meters. We thought that size was the best, given the width of the fairways and the landscape around the greens.
Have you considered new shapes and undulations, ensuring that each course has its own route of attack?
That's right, holes #8 and #18 were newly constructed at the location of the B green. We created the New Green, considered the surrounding bunkers and mounds, and thought about how strategic the green would be as a new green.
Are you adding renovations to the par 3 holes?
The East Course has few water hazards, and the pond in front of the 4th green was small, so it was enlarged and its banks were renovated. The pond in front of the 4th green was small, so it was enlarged and its banks were renovated. I am proud of the unique appearance of this 221-yard par 3.
